Strategies to Prevent Heart Disease

June 29, 2023

Since 1950, heart disease has been the leading cause of death. The term “heart
disease” refers to various conditions that affect the heart. While not all risk factors of
heart disease are manageable, these are some things you can do to lower your risk of
heart disease.

Eat Healthy
Making changes to your diet can be tough, but making small changes can have a great
effect on your heart, weight, and hormones. Adding plenty of fruits and vegetables to
your diet, selecting whole grain options, choosing healthy fats, and reducing sodium
intake are great eating habits to develop to keep your heart healthy.

Stay Active
Regular physical activity can improve your cardiovascular fitness and lift your mood. It is
important to aim for at least 30-60 minutes of physical activity daily. Cycling, swimming,
walking, gardening, hiking, dancing, and running are some fun activities to try, so get
moving!

Quit Smoking
Smoking has a harmful impact on your heart and blood vessels. When you quit
smoking, you reduce your risk of getting and dying from heart disease. Once you quit
smoking, it takes just three weeks and your lungs will be stronger, your blood flow will
improve, and you decrease your risk of getting heart disease.

Control Cholesterol and Blood Pressure
High cholesterol and blood pressure are two leading factors of heart disease. Following
the previous steps can help control both your cholesterol and blood pressure. If these
methods do not work for you, it may be best to see your doctor.
